Nelson Orienteering Club

About NOC

We organise a range of map-based navigation events throughout the year, suitable for all ages, levels of fitness and experience.

There is a fantastic range of maps in varied terrain - from urban parks and street areas to forests, farmland and sub-alpine terrain. Events will be either running / walking or mountain bike specific.

On the August Controllers' Clinic: "Our teacher, Alister Metherell, covered a vast range of information, from health and safety to what is required for a beginner’s white course. However, it was the historical scenarios and strange one-offs that really built a picture of what is needed to organise an event, from club level to larger A-level gatherings."

  • Andrew Upsall

"Orienteering is a technical sport. The navigational skills required to move through the terrain at speed whilst rapidly interpreting a pseudo-subjective 2D canvas loosely representing the complex 3D environment, under oxygen debt, take years to refine and master. Many don’t, and even if you do, it is for only a fleeting moment. Herein lies the challenge and beauty of this sport."
